GANGA Stone Sculpture group of the goddess Ganga mounted on her vehicle: the “makara”, aquatic mythic monster. The crocodile like animal has a head with long jaws and an uplifted tail covered in scales. The goddess, now headless sits sideways, cross-legged on her mount. Ganga is the deification of the most sacred river in India. She is frequently depicted in the entrance of temples, as an auspicious presence. |
