| PAIR OF JALIS Marble Mughal India, 18th/19th century 61 x 4 x 90,5 cm A pair of architectural stones (jalis) in white marble carved with a fretted pattern of small arches within a solid marble frame. They would have been windows or part of a balustrade in a North Indian Mughal palace or house of a wealthy house. These windows were suitable for a warm climate and allowed court ladies to observe life outside the house without being seen. These jalis are usually in sandstone, marble examples being fairly rare. |
