CROSS

Gilt Silver, Glass (thewa) and Gold
Pratapgarh, Rajasthan, 19th century
H 6 cm

Silver gilt cross with gold decoration applied on a green glass, using the “thewa” decoration. The decoration does not include religious motifs but depicts Indian court ladies dressed in a fashion typical of Rajasthan. The “thewa” technique was introduced in the late 18th century and survives up to the present day. This is a rare item, a Christian cross. It was probably commissioned by a European.
