SMALL CASKET
Venice, 16th /17th cent.
11,4 x 9,4 x 10,5 cm
A small light-wood casket with straw- work flower decoration, on a black ground, suggesting oriental lacquerwork. This small box with twisted corner columns, a Venetian model, attempts to replicate the effect of Asian Lacquer. Venice, together with Lisbon, were at the time the main ports of entry of Eastern goods into Europe, and this opening to the East is noticeable in the Venetian applied arts of the 16th and 17th centuries. |
