Fall-front table cabinet with all the visible surfaces overlaid with tortoiseshell framed by ivory bands. The French traveller, François Pyrard de Laval who travelled through India in the early 17th century wrote in his “Voyages” that in Guzarate wonderful cabinets in the fashion of those from Germany were made in tortoiseshell and other materials. |
