7 / 31 YAKSHI Red Sandstone Orissa, India, 11/12th century H 80 cm Sandstone pillar carved in high relief with a female figure, a spirit of nature, a Yakshi, associated with trees and fertility. The figure stands on a semi-circular lotus base supported on a scroll of stylized plants. The sensuous lightly clad and bejeweled female figure is carved with an acute sense of rhythm and conveys the primeval energy of nature in bloom.
