PLAQUE WITH SHALOW CARVING
Wood with polychromy
Ceylon or Southeast Asia, 17th century
41,3 x 1,9 x 31,4 cm
Side panel of a writing box decorated with gilt shallow carving on a black lacquer ground. The decoration shows a double headed eagle within a stylized floral arrangement. The two orifices for the side handle are visible.
This group of late 16th and early 17th century shallow carved items for the Portuguese market, produced in the East has not been fully studied. Various authors and academics suggest the Gulf of Bengal, Cochin, Ceylon, Malacca, Achen and Burma or Thailand as possible centres of production. |
