A wood carving of a Singa, (in sanscrit literally meaning a lion) a mythical creature, a cross between a water buffalo, a horse and a naga (mythical serpent). The Singa is associated with fertility, abundance, and protection. These sculptures were placed on either side of the façades of wealthy houses in Batak villages in the 19th and early 20th century. |
