LAKSMI NARAYANA

Sandstone
Madhya Pradesh or Rajasthan, India,
circa 10th century
65 x 25 x 121 cm

A very fine stone carving with delicate movement of two figures in an erotic posture (mithuna), the god Vishnu and his consort Laksmi, goddess of the earth, of bounty and luck. This style of sculpture is typical of 10th century Indore in Madhya Pradesh or Rajasthan in West India. Vishnu’s face is lit with an inward smile, pleased, but almost detached. Both figures are carved with ornamental jewels, typical of the period, including earrings, multiple chains and necklaces, armbands and jewelled girdles.
