PORTABLE ALTAR WITH TWENTY FOUR JINAS
Brass with silver and copper inlays.
India, Rajasthan or Gujarat
Circa 14th century
H 32 cm
Small portable altar with the twenty four Jinas of the Jain religion, organized in a simple pattern following the aesthetics of bareness of the Jain religion. The central figure is one of the twenty four Jinas of the past, which preceded the historic Jina, Mahavira, a contemporary of the historic Buddha. The dedicatory inscription in the verso should identify the Jina and provide a precise date. |
