SEATED BUDDHA
Bronze
Laos, 17th century
H 55 cm
Bronze image of the Buddha with a dark dense patina. The Buddha is sitting on a tiered open lotus base. This sculpture follows closely many of the features of the neighbouring Kingdom of Lan Na of Northern Thailand,. This is apparent in the stockiness of the body, with wide shoulders and open chest and the open lotus base. On the other hand the arched eyebrows, the straight nose, the small mouth, and the pointes ears are Laotian characteristics as is the tiered lower section of the base. |
