BETEL BOX


Tortoiseshell and silver
Ceylon (Sri Lanka), 18th century

A rectangular betel box in tortoiseshell enriched with elaborate silver mounts including carrying handles. Boxes of this type were produced in Ceylon and Batavia and were travelling accessories in the 18th century when betel use was an important social activity.
